Today at Columbia River Veterinary Specialists was anything but ordinary.
What started as a routine day in an emergency hospital quickly became a powerful reminder of the unpredictability of ER medicine - and why we’re here. A mom dog arrived after being in labor for four long hours. It was clear she needed help, and fast.
As she was taken into surgery, the full picture came into focus. During her emergency C-section, the team discovered that her uterus had ruptured - a life-threatening situation for both mom and her puppies. In true ER fashion, there was no pause, no panic - just action.
Dr. Tegan Alce and the team immediately jumped into action, and within moments, the entire hospital rallied together. Clinical teams, administrative staff, support roles - everyone stepped in wherever they were needed. Departments blurred, titles disappeared, and the focus became singular: save mom, save puppies.
One by one, seven puppies were delivered, each met with calm, practiced hands and collective focus. Warm towels were passed, breaths were monitored, colors checked - every puppy mattered, and every role played a part.
Thanks to seamless teamwork across all departments - both clinical and administrative, Mom made it through surgery beautifully, and all seven puppies were delivered healthy. Even better, mom and her puppies are doing well and get to go home the very same day, together.
Days like today remind us that in emergency medicine, anything can happen - and that’s exactly why we exist. To show up in the hardest moments. To support one another without hesitation. And to care for the pets and families of our community when they need us most.
Seven new lives. One strong mom. And a hospital that once again showed what true teamwork looks like.
